This could lead to the discovery of new therapies for heart disease, researchers have developed a new artificial intelligence (AI) method that is able to detect the erosion of plaques in the arteries of the heart. The method uses optic coherence (OCT) pictures to track arterial plaque. The findings are crucial since the breakdown of plaque may be an indication of an attack on the heart or other serious heart conditions. The OCT refers to an optical image technology is used in blood vessels to create 3D images of the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle.

The OCT technique is employed to identify plaque erosion. However, the amount of data produced and the difficulty in understanding the images leads to significant interobserver variation. To address this problem, researchers developed AI for the OCT method to detect plaque erosion.

“If cholesterol plaque that lines arterial arteries begins to break down, it could cause an abrupt decrease in the flow of blood to your heart, known as acute coronary syndrome which needs urgent care. The new method we have developed could in the improvement of the diagnostics of plaque erosion, and could be utilized to design new treatments for people suffering from heart disease,” said Zhao Wang from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Wang is the chief researcher on the paper that was published in Biomedical Optics Express.

The brand new AI method is comprised of two fundamental steps. first, an AI model referred to as a neural network studies the image in its entirety and then two pieces of shape data to determine the areas of plaque erosion.

The prediction is improved by a post-processing method that is based on the experience of doctors who are able to make the diagnosis.

The researchers conducted a study on the new method and discovered that the algorithm could accurately predict 80 percent of cases of plaque erosion with a 73% positively predictive. Furthermore, the assessment made with the AI technique was consistent with the ones made by experienced doctors.
